Ages ago, Lauren told me that if I was going to read one of the Gossip Girl books, I should do so on an empty stomach. She was so right. The Clique isn't one of that series, but it's in the same genre: Early Bret Easton Ellis for the 13/14-year-old set.
It just made me crabby. Every single character in it was either stupid, shallow, a moral weakling, spoiled rotten, a bitch or some combination of the five. UGH.
At the same time, I can totally see how reading the series could become compulsive.
It reminded me of the movie Mean Girls, except the author tried to make the girls seem sort of sympathetic. I'm sorry, but it's hard to feel any sort of warmth towards someone that dumps a bowl of gazpacho over an innocent person's head. Ugh. Now I feel all crabby again. Yuck. Yuck yuck yuck.

But didn't I also tell you that I loooooved Mean Girls? Because I did. It's perfect. Heathers for a new generation, without all the killing and stuff.

Oh, I thought Mean Girls was great. The title characters were rotten through and through -- they didn't try and make 'em sympathetic at all. LiLo came around and stopped being mean because she realized that she was turning into them, not because she started feeling bad for them.
And of course, I loved the bus scene.

Me, I love the Gossip Girl books. Yes, you need to read them when you're in the mood for trashy, but for me they're not about topic do much as format. They're told by an omniscient narrator who'll occasionally insert an editoral, direct-to-readers comment or two, and the action alternates between traditional novel form and said narrator's blog entries (and, like the pictures and words in a picturebook, both parts are essential to telling the story). It's, to my knowledge, the first YA series to incorporate blogs as a writing form (jumping off from epistle-style "a tale in letters" stuff like Regarding the Fountain by Kate and Sarah Klise), but the postmodern and topological issues tend to take a back seat to the "how can these characters be so shallow?" stuff.

oops - that should be "..so much as format". it's getting late around here...

OMG! i love the clique series. They are my all time favorite books now. I have all five of them now and is waiting for Dial L for Loser, and It's not easy being Mean. Theres just something about these books that make them so great. It makes you wanna keep reading them. It has what happens in everyday life. People these days can actually relate to what happens in these books. Because in every school theres always a bunch of cliques. But theres always one that dominates over the other ones. Lisi Harrison is now my favorite author.

I am like totaly ob-ssesed with these books. I know that Dylan is WAY to obssesed with her weight and Alicia is to obssesed with her boobs being too big and stuff, but it is like, exact junior high drama. I really love Massie and how she is so in control of everything. In a way I can't help but wish I am like her but also think that she is a total bitch which is not good! But I mean who really cares what other people think right? I mean sure I would way rather have people love me to death than not like me at all and think im a bitch, but what really matters is what I want to be and what I think o myself! so what does it matter if I'm a bitch? It's way better than not liking who I am at all. But I did think that what Alicia did to Claire, no one would actualy have the guts to do, not even for massie! I mean Puh-lease! I totaly want to have friends exactly like that, that I can talk to about ANYTHING at all, and have a sleeppover with everyfriday night, of course unless something came up in which case would always have to do with all four of them. But I would way rather have that life then just a normal life. But I could not beleive that they all wear like, Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacob and stuff. I mean the farthest I have been is like, Deisel and DKNY but nothing more expensive than that. And I could also not beleive how completely obssesed Dylan was with her weight. I mean, I think that is actually unhealthy! Puh-lease! But I do ah-dore claire for standing up to massie and calling her a bitch! Although I would never had the guts, I wish that were me. I havn't said anything about Kristen though. She is kind of anoying, constantly complaining about her parents and how uptight they are. I mean get a grip! I do like her though. She, other than Claire, is the most normal in the book. She is also really funny about how she is ob-ssesed with cross-words and how everything "is a cross-word puzzle" in the words of Massie Block. My favorite Character is by far Massie. She seems to have everything figured out in this book. She knows what she wants and then goes out and gets it. There are no no's in her world. But then of course Claire objects alot to the stuff she has to say. But Massie doesn't care about Claire so she doesn't really count.
So in conclusion I would say I know just about all there is know about Massie Block, Alicia Rivera, Dylan Marvil, Kristen Gregory, Claire Lyons and just alot about Layne Abeley. Not everything about Layne (Claire's first friend at OCD, not including the Nurse) but alot.
This is definatly my favorite book ever! I hope you liked as much as i did too!

"Its not easy being mean" is not yet released but the back of the book that ive been reading is the same as the back of the first book. Is this a mistake of the websites or of lisi Harrison.

yea i have been looking for a summary of the book as well, but all i get is the summary that is on the back of the first novel in the series.

i thought the clique series was stupid. they are good until you become old enough to realize that the clique is totally fake and there are real books out there that have plot lines of the same genre, but aren't about catty seventh graders, which i believe is a little immature.
