Beyond Twilight, a new favorite here: the Friends and Enemies" trilogy by David Field. The newest one is "The Fairest Star." We have young people in love in a tough environment, as they're traveling between 1599 and the present. All the strife in this trilogy has parallels in our own time. (Perhaps we can finally learn that hatred gets you nowhere...)

YA has changed (naturally). I am happy for her that she enjoys Twilight, but I wonder why she thinks it is romantic when Edward "evinces the most profound disdain and distaste for" Bella? Just because that is how the characters acted in gothic novels? For her it seems to all be about nostalgia.
Rebekah commented on '"I hate Y.A. novels; they bore me."'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e2010536405d7e970b2008-12-06T01:19:55Z2008-12-06T01:19:55ZRebekahhttp://pugnacioun.livejournal.comIf only she used for powers for good.
If only she used for powers for good.
Katlin Seagraves commented on '"I hate Y.A. novels; they bore me."'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e201053632efe5970b2008-12-05T05:00:47Z2008-12-05T05:00:48ZKatlin Seagraveshttp://twitter.com/iamliterateI can't stand it when people compare Harry Potter to Twilight. I read most of the "ancient" titles she mentioned (obviously a child of the '70's)-- Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Mrs. Mike, etc and I still read and adore "YA" fiction. The problem lies in what you were talking about in an earlier post. We need to get rid of the YA tag.
dangermom commented on '"I hate Y.A. novels; they bore me."'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e2010536306a30970b2008-12-04T17:58:38Z2008-12-04T17:58:38ZdangermomOK, half of this essay really annoyed me.
Did she mix up Gossip Girls and Traveling Pants? Not being a YA librarian, I haven't read either. Yeah, I should...

"Twilight is fantastic." What? "...a thousand-page treatise on the art of foreplay." Nobody ever says "I hate all novels written for adults; they bore me," but somehow they can't get it through their heads that YA is a very broad and diverse category of books. This is akin to the reason I hate the label "genre fiction", because it's so often used in a context that ignores how many categories of books it lumps together.
Kim McCollum-Clark commented on '"I hate Y.A. novels; they bore me."'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e20105362fcdc5970b2008-12-04T13:17:04Z2008-12-04T13:17:04ZKim McCollum-ClarkI should so totally NOT read Caitlin Flanagan on any subject WHATSOEVER. I can't believe she conflated the Traveling Pants with Gossip Girls.
