I don't know who Edward Fitzgerald is, but I hope his death was painful.

His was especially harsh, right? He didn't confine himself to insulting one author, he had to go after her entire sex. Yeesh.

I did a little more investigating on Nabokov's Hemingway slam ("I read him for the first time in the early 'forties, something about bells, balls and bulls, and loathed it."), and the really crazy thing is that it seems that "bells, balls, and bulls" is actually a reference to a phrase from about 1864, from a book about surnames. I don't know if ol' Vladimir was just reading the 1864 title, doin' a little research, and then was like "Bells, balls, bulls! That describes Ernest to a T!", or what, but it's pretty awesome.
