“As far as I know this protest is about three or four individuals, who made their feelings known on the blog Monday morning, and unfortunately made the decision to link our production to Newtown,” [Superintendent] Brady said. “We are doing the high school edition of ‘Sweeney Todd,’ which is one of the most produced shows at high schools in the country, and which has some of the lyrics and scenes toned down from the Broadway version. This is a suitable show for Amity High School.”

“Amity High School students are assigned and taught to perform the horrific acts of gruesome murder, cannibalism, rape, suicide, etc.,”
Wow. They must *really* disagree with Hamlet being taught.

And just imagine what they'd make of Titus Andronicus.

I believe that in a time in their lives where drama is an everyday occurrence, Sweeney Todd is a wonderful play and a lesson to high schoolers. The point of the play is to show that letting yourself be consumed by rage is self-destructive. Sweeney died because he never stopped, took a breath, and tried to move on with his life. He let his animalistic rage take control and it ended with him destroying everything he loved and himself. I think it's a beautiful play and high schoolers should be able to perform it.
