Anne 3 was awful, awful, awful on many levels, but most basically, the timing made no sense at all! Anne's youngest daughter was supposed to be 16 or 17 when the Great War was happening, and it is hard to really get at the horror of WWI when you are in America. It just didn't massacre us the way it did the Europeans and the Commonwealth nations.
Chrissy commented on 'ACK.'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e200d834fb9cd069e22006-11-14T16:43:38Z2007-08-19T09:37:27ZChrissyAll I can find so far: Helen Ericson was introduced to Harriet M.
Helen Ericson was introduced to Harriet M. Welsch in 1964 when she was 9 years old. A passionate fan of Harriet the Spy, she was elated when the estate of Louise Fitzhugh granted her and Delacorte Press permission to continue Harriet’s story in a companion book. She is a journalist living in the Midwest with two daughters and a son.

(All three books. The Long Secret is my favorite of the three, oddly enough.)

While I'm sad that Anne3 is as bad as I suspected, I'm kind of glad that I haven't missed out on anything wonderful by avoiding it. Every time I shelve it here at the library, I shudder.
Sarah commented on 'ACK.'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e200d834fb648669e22006-11-13T16:01:32Z2007-08-19T08:25:59ZSarahhttp://nonanon.com/I have not read the new Harriet the Spy books (don't think I can either), but I have had the...
I have not read the new Harriet the Spy books (don't think I can either), but I have had the misfortune of watching the third Anne movie. It is not super fab. It is, in fact, the textbook definition of "unadulterated pap." I had to go back and watch the first two immediately just to get the horrible feeling out of the pit of my stomach.
Little Willow commented on 'ACK.'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e200d834fb621b69e22006-11-13T15:54:54Z2007-08-19T08:26:53ZLittle Willowhttp://www.slayground.net/Great new category / tag. :) I have read Harriet the Spy, The Long Secret, and Sport by Louise Fitzhugh....
Great new category / tag. :)

I have read Harriet the Spy, The Long Secret, and Sport by Louise Fitzhugh. I have not read Harriet Spies Again nor Harriet the Spy, Double Agent by Helen Ericson.

I have read all eight of the Anne novels and seen all three of the Anne movies a la Kevin Sullivan. The third movie is wrong, and it makes me sad. They finally assembled most of the original cast (rest in peace, Colleen Dewhurst) and then made a film that did not match the books. Le sigh. Megan Follows rules, nevertheless.
Sarah commented on 'ACK.'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e200d834c5d4c253ef2006-11-11T19:17:25Z2007-08-19T08:25:36ZSarahI picked up Harriet Spies Again in the library, just to SEE, and on something like the third page Harriet...
I picked up Harriet Spies Again in the library, just to SEE, and on something like the third page Harriet comments that they're moving from the house she has lived in all her life. I hadn't read Harriet the Spy in years, and yet I remembered that she'd lived in a different place when she was younger (next door to the nasty-looking boy, who she pinched, remember?). I figured if the writer/editor/everyone was paying that little attention to the original book, it was only going piss me off, and so I didn't read further to learn what other crimes lurked within the pages.

How hard would it have been to write the same book, about a new character, who loves the book Harriet the Spy and tried to copy her in every way? Really, how hard?
Adam S. commented on 'ACK.'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8345169e469e200d834fb2a0069e22006-11-11T13:36:55Z2007-08-19T07:42:50ZAdam S.http://glibandspiel.blogspot.comOnly you could make a mental connection between Bill the Cat and Harriet the Spy.
Only you could make a mental connection between Bill the Cat and Harriet the Spy.
