I'm quite fond of Hammett's first-person voices. But I really don't like the third-person narration of The Maltese Falcon and, consequently, Sam Spade. Go figger.


I've always liked the Op more than Spade -- and I especially love the Op because I can almost hear his voice when I read. It never occured to me that my preference might be due to the first person aspect. Makes sense, though.


I'm reading some of Hammett's short stories and realing that, as much as I like his other protagonists, I also like the Op better.
