Do publishers really have time - if they notice a joke/ripoff - to write a letter saying, 'oh, haha, you're so clever sending in Austen manuscripts'? If I were them I'm probably use the form letter, too.


I agree that the form letter is the way to go. If you were a publisher and someone sent you Macbeth, would you want to get into a debate with them about whether they wrote it or Shakespeare wrote it? I am sure that many of these dont even get read but simply sent back thanking them for their submissions. I'm sure publishers get thousands of unsolicited manuscripts.


Glad that other people agree it's obnoxious! I thought I was just being cranky.
