Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret
Sara Zarr, Story of a Girl
Grown up finalists here.
I've read the Alexie and the Zarr. I can't believe I still haven't read Hugo Cabret yet -- I am such a loser.
Hugo Cabret goes really really fast. So, yeah, no excuse.

You should really read the Selznick. I picked up the book at my local library and was thinking that it was really huge. Then I read it in one sitting. It's filled with almost as many drawings as words and the drawings are really lovely. They are very simple, but each one definitely does its own thousand words worth.
