Interesting.

And what do you think of a girl's diary written by a man?

Gail

Personally, I think Adrian Mole was the last decent diary book written. Helen Fielding has acknowledged Bridget Jones' debt to him. Both Bridget's diary and Adrian's (written years earlier) start out with a list written on New Year's Day.

I hate to sound closed-minded, but the fact that this book has a blurb on the cover calling it "South Africa's Catcher in the Rye" would be enough to make me put it back on the shelf. Does humankind really need another Catcher?

Leila

Brian: I am the Wallpaper wasn't a diary, but it was a very convincing, Judy Blume-ish read about a 13-year-old girl, and it was written by a man. Loved that one.

Gail: The Catcher in the Rye blurb was written by Alexander McCall Smith, and it made wonder if maybe he just isn't up on the YA, and so Catcher was the only thing he had to compare it to. If that makes any sense at all...

Gail

Yes, it most definitely does.
