From the Globe and Mail:
Despite her great success, it is known that she suffered from depression, that she was isolated, sad and filled with worry and dread for much of her life. But our family has never spoken publicly about the extent of her illness.
What has never been revealed is that L.M. Montgomery took her own life at the age of 67 through a drug overdose.
I wasn't told the details of what happened, and I never saw the note she left, but I do know that it asked for forgiveness.
Wow.
Oh. A part of my heart just died. :(

Oh I really didn't want to know that :(
She was my favorite author as a kid. Poor woman :(

I've always thought she was probably more like Emily than Anne.

I am at a loss for years. I used to sleep with my Anne books under my pillow; as an adult, have pored through her journals. I knew of her husband's illness...but this...I am so sad.

I've thought that too, mb. Reading her journals, especially the later volumes, is a sad experience. She took things so hard and suffered so intensely, I wasn't surprised when I heard this news. God rest her soul.

I wasn't surprised, either. I've seen a few articles recently that suggested her later years were rough emotionally.
