It just seems wrong to use animation rather than puppets, and animation itself (judging by the screenshot) looks uninspired.

This is just wrong. Cannibalizing the guy's legacy with a CG show featuring one of his puppets? Pretty sure Mr. Rogers lessons are timeless. You think you need to get kids ready to learn, do a new show.

Nooooooooo! I grew up with Mr. Rogers....I made daily trips to my television just to "be" in his neighborhood. There was something magical, in my childhood years, about the puppets and his lessons. CG is just not going to do him justice....why update and "fix" what wasn't broken? Children loved his show, and they'd love it again ...or re-runs. All of the animation is just way too much. Blagh.
I miss Fred Rogers too.
