...my sister and I got to talking about my last Kirkus column:
Aaaaand then Bree went off about Mary Ingalls. But I'd rather that the rest of the world didn't know just how horrible the Roy Girls really are, so I'm not including that. Choice quote: "laura, stop slouching. listen to your blind pious goody two shoes beautiful sister".

I hate Mary, too. What a simpering goody-two-shoes.

Bree will be so pleased to have company in that corner!

I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate Mary Ingalls, but I really felt that she got a lot of gross favoritism from their parents prior to going blind and was overly coddled afterward, while poor Carrie was just left to flounder and she was basically sick forever after the scarlet fever episode. Then again, the books were written from Laura's perspective and so there might have been some exaggeration.
And are we supposed to like that Laurie marries Amy in Little Women? I hate Laurie for that. Amy? Really? Gag.

Oh, I couldn't STAND Mary Ingalls. When I was nine, I LOATHED Gilbert Sullivan. I hated, hated, HATED all of the sickening March sisters, with the exception of Jo, until she married Elderly Man instead of marching off and going it alone. Yeah, yeah, I get the time period, and that she couldn't really do that, but the author just had her ... cave. And for what, security? Ugh. UGH. I NEVER got that. And let's not go into Peeta...
So, so much hating. So many books, so many mental arguments with authors.

@Emily: I totally lost all respect for Laurie when he married Amy. Because, as you said, REALLY? And yes, Bree picked up on the favoritism as well...
@Tanita: I just read your comment three times, and I kept reading 'Gilbert Sullivan' as 'Gilbert Blythe', and my head almost exploded. Until I slowed down. (But I don't know who Gilbert Sullivan is, unless there's supposed to be an '&' in there.) But... PEETA!! Why you want to break my heart, T???

I AM happy to hear that there are people in my camp. "Simpering" is a PERFECT adjective.
Mary was a snot, both before and after she went blind. She was always so busy loving cross-stitch and sucking up that I wouldn't have blamed Laura if she'd pushed her out of the back of the wagon en route westward. But then Mary would have told on her.
And yes, Carrie totally got the shaft. Everyone was so busy loving on Grace running around in her damn swan's down jacket and Mary's magical "seeing" fingers that I'm surprised Carrie didn't wheeze herself to death in the corner. Not that anyone would have noticed.

And now, weirdly enough, all of this hating on Mary is making me want to re-visit the Little House books.

Um... I may have started Silver Lake when I was at Dad's the other day.

Dude, I totally sympathize with you about St. John. The first time I read Jane Eyre I had to stop reading at that part and write a long rant about how much I hated St. John and his inflated ego and his "righteousness". I was so worried that Jane would actually go with him. GOD he's so vile.
(@Tanita: I'm with you about Peeta. I got sick of not knowing whether or not he was sincere, although I *guess* I didn't *hate* him.)
