...Wow, I did not like 4/5 books on this list. It's certainly putting me off reading Pirate Cinema.

@Beth: If it makes you feel any better, Seraphina is on the debut novels list...

That DOES make me feel better! (How'd you guess?) Although I wasn't as high on Seraphina as seemingly everyone else in the world, I liked it, and I thought it had a lot of merit.

I stillllllll haven't read it! I own it, even -- I can see it from where I'm sitting right now. I AM SUCH A LOSERY LOSER. *weeps*

UM WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR. At least to see what people are talking about! Also because I want to take someone else's pulse on This Particular Phrase on the very first page.

YAY! I really enjoyed Dodger. I've been meaning to read Catherynne M. Valente's two Fairyland books but, as usual, it's a case of so many books & so little time.
Beth - I read Seraphine, what phrase are do you mean? Now I'm very curious.

There's this line that seems to be a litmus test as to whether the voice/prose will work for you - I'm pretty sure it's on the first page: "a rich symphony of indigestion." It did not work for me.
